Hallo ich heisse Andrea und bin 24
Jahre alt. Komme aus Bayern, in der nähe von Würzburg. Ich bin halb Ami
und halb Deutsch. Ich vermisse alles aus Deutschland. Die Landschaft, das
Essen und die Menschen. Es ist einfach wunderschön.
Ich bin jetzt seit ca. 4 Wochen in den Staaten. Ich wohne in Fayetteville,
North Carolina. Ich hätte gerne mehr Bekantschaften hier. Mal treffen zum
Kaffeetrinken usw. Wer interesse hat mich kennen zu lernen, ich würde mich

Everything!
Hi my name is Diana (35) and I am originally from Fulda. I'm German but
have been in the US since 1992 and currently live in West Columbia, SC.
My husband
and I never thought we would settle down in South Carolina. After
many years of talking about making a big move, we are moving to Germany
for about 3-5 years and then will see. We have been talking about moving
for some time, just not about moving to Germany until very recently. We
are excited and a little scared since this is a big change. We are giving
up a lot but we are ready for a new adventure in our lives...a change.
I would love
to hear from others that have moved back home and what struggles they may
have had and some tips. I would LOVE to hear from people in Fulda or
surrounding areas that are part of a German American club, we love to talk
to other Americans and Germans in Fulda.

Hier einmal
eine etwas andere Perspektive:
Nach fast zwanzig Jahren in der USA habe ich es vor Heimweh nicht mehr
ausgehalten, und bin in meine geliebte Wachau in Österreich zurückgekehrt.
Sobald meine Kinder erwachsen und selbstständig waren, habe ich mein 'Binkerl'
zusammengepackt, und den großen Sprung gewagt. Jetzt bin ich seit etwa einem
Jahr in der Heimat zurück, und freue mich an jedem Tag, an jedem Moment und
bin sehr stolz daß ich es gewagt habe!
Meine Wiedereinbürgerung war lächerlich einfach, obwohl ich mich so ziemlich
auf gut Glück in mein neues (altes) Leben gestürzt habe! Ein erwachsener
Sohn ist mir schon auf die Fersen gefolgt, und ich freue mich auf den Sommer
mit meinem 8jährigen Enkelsohn, und auf den nächsten Schub: zwei weitere
Kinder kommen im Spätsommer um ihre neue Heimat zu 'beschnuppern'.
Dank der GermanDeli waren die letzen Jahre in Amerika etwas erträglicher.

Hi everyone,
What do I
miss about Germany? Everything and more! My name is Ruth and I am
originally from Düsseldorf. I left Germany at the age of 19, and have
lived in Tennessee and South Carolina ever since. I am a Spanish teacher
at a small high school in Sweetwater, Tennessee.
I so miss the food and the people. I miss speaking German and to just
socialize with my own kind, if you know what I mean. Although I am more
from here than there now, it's just not the same. My kids are all grown
except for one who is graduating from high school this year and going to
college soon. So I would really welcome some German people writing me and
talking about life in the US and such. Please write me, I would just
love to hear from you.

New Jersey!
Ich heisse
Tina, bin 30 Jahre alt und komme ursprünglich aus Vallendar (bei
Koblenz). Mein Mann (US Air Force) und ich sind jetzt seit 6 Jahren auf
McGuire AFB, NJ stationiert, nachdem wir mit dem Militär einmal halb um
die Welt gezogen sind. Seit ein paar Jahren habe ich unheimliches
Heimweh... Ich glaube es fing an als ich im Commissary auf der Base "Essigessenz"
(hahaha) entdeckt hatte. Ja, ich weiss - verrückt!
Was ich am
meisten vermisse, außer natürlich meiner Familie, Freunde & gutes
deutsches Essen, ist einfach nur das "daheim sein". Und noch ein paar
Kleinigkeiten: Karneval, öffentliche Schwimmbäder, Bürgersteige, weniger
Autofahren oder eher gesagt das "etwas diszipliniertere Autofahren" und
Grießklößchensuppe (Hurrah! GermanDeli kann helfen).
Ich würde
mich sehr über E-mails von Leuten in meinem Alter freuen. Vielleicht gibt
es jemanden in der South-Jersey Gegend, der sich ab und an mal zum Deutsch
quatschen verabreden möchte? Wäre prima.

Was 'ne
tolle Seite! Meine Name ist Miriam, 30 Jahre alt, habe 2
Kinder und bin Österreicherin (Kärnten) wohne aber schon 13 Jahre in
Deutschland.
Wir sind in
Landstuhl stationiert und mein Mann ist zur zeit Deployed. Leider
kann ich noch nichts dazu beitragen was ich vermisse da wir erst im
Februar 09 in die USA (West Virginia) gehen.
Ein bisschen
mulmig ist mir schon zumute wenn ich daran denke aber ich habe den besten
Ehemann und die besten Schwiegereltern die mann sich wünschen kann deswegen
denke ich darüber nicht soviel nach.....
Aber auch
hier in Deutschland vermisse ich so manche österreichischen Sachen was
aber mit einem Besuch bei meinen Eltern schnell getan ist.
Vielleicht gibt es ja manche Deutsche oder Österreiche in West Virginia.
Würde mich
über Emails freuen....

I miss everything and all of my relatives
dearly. I miss my Oma, the food, the culture, the history, the air,
the scenery, the customs, the carnivals, the bakeries, the churches and
the bells going off every hour. Germany is a place that can't be described
but only experienced!
My mom is from Ausburg and my dad is from
Wisconsin. They met in Ausburg and got married. I am so happy to be
a part of both these cultures but Germany will always be my heaven on
Earth. I will always be homesick for Germany, and so will my mother.
Hopefully we will be able to go home one more time soon. Especially
for my mothers sake. She is not young and her physical health is not
as strong any more. So getting the chance is crucial. Thank
you for listening to my story and more so for letting me tell it!

I
come from a small place called Steinebach am Worthsee (just outside
München). Our family migrated to Melbourne, Australia, quite a long time
ago. I remember home quite well. I google-earth around the place all the
time.
Food
wise, I'm quite content here in Melbourne. We have some really good Swiss,
Austrian and German butchers here. Not many but enough to keep the home
sickness at bay and enough to keep the food memories happy. The sweet
things are all catered for as well. The cakes are made by all the adopted
aunties and brought to each other's places. Everyone has their own
speciality. My mum makes a mean Plum Streuselkuchen. I'm starting to drool
just thinking about it. I was just ten when I came here.
What
I miss the most is when I visited Germany. My aunt, who lives in Ismaning
(also outside of München, but the other side to our town), would get on
her bike and head down to the bakery so that her favourite niece from
Australia could have her pretzels and beautiful German Brötchen. YUMMY!
Other than that I really miss Wurstsalat, made with Leonie Wurst. Sulze
also brings back memories.
If there is anyone in your neck of the woods who knows about the places
that I've just mentioned I would be happy to communicate.

Hallo an alle von Austin, TX.
Ich bin nach Texas 1988 von Augsburg gezogen. Da gibts nicht viel das ich
nicht vermisse. Oma's Knödel, Schweinebraten, Bayrisches Bier, deutsche
Frauen, Straßenbahnen, Züge, Innenstadt mit Fußgängerzonen, Biergarten,
Fußball (FC Bayern natürlich), und meine Freunde und restliche Familie
natürlich auch.
Ich habe auch einen Freund
hier von Bamberg/Hallstadt, der mir hilft mit meinen 2 Kindern, 5 und 6
Jahre alt, die ich alleine aufziehe. Mit seiner Hilfe habe ich die
GermanDeli gefunden, und bin schon kräftig am einkaufen. Semmelknödel,
Bauern Brot, Schmalz, Blutwurst, Alkohol gefüllte Schokolade. Wenn es da
hier auch geben würde, das wär ja noch schöner. Falls jemand mit mir in

I am
American/German. An Army Brat born in Augsburg and grew up in Bad Tolz.
My parents divorced before my dad rotated back to the States. Spent my
first fourteen years in Deutschland. I have been in the US for 30 years
now, but still have incredible Heimweh. I was stationed at Gibbs Kaserne
in Frankfurt for three years in the early 80's. Would love to talk to
anyone from that area. I'm interested in practicing my German, as I have

Mein Name ist Daniela Heppard, ich komme aus
Kornwestheim (bei Stuttgart). Ich bin 43 Jahre alt und lebe seit 23 Jahren
in California, Missouri. Da ich hier auf dem 'Land' lebe aber in der
Grosstadt aufgewachsen bin muss ich sagen ich vermisse das ganze Grosstadtleben.
Ohhh... und den Weihnachtsmarkt und Glühwein, frische Brezeln mit Butter,
die Strassenbahn oder Zug Verbindungen, meine Schwester Sandra.....
Ich habe einen guten Job hier und viele Freunde
aber meine beste Freundin lebt in Deutschland. Ich vermisse immer noch jeden
Zipfel von Deutschland aber habe mich doch sehr gut in den Statten eingelebt.

This
may not be such a "memory" as the others. There is a store in the
Hauptbahnhof (main train station) in München that sells the BEST country
potatoes in the world (trust me I have been to 18 countries). I forgot the
name of the store. But it's on the corner at the top of the train station
where all the inside stores start. The store itself is open, there are no
doors on the sides. They have several small square counters that sell pizza,
Weisswurst and the "to go" foods. They sell the potatoes in a cone shaped
cardboard fry container, and offer them in klein and gross. There is this
seasoning on the potato "fries" and it's amazing. They aren't like the
"McDonald's" fries. These are potatoes that have been cut maybe 4-6 times.
The potatoes are nice and large, so you can get a nice meal out of the gross
size. And always wash it down with some Mezzomix! Yum! I almost want to buy
a plane ticket right now to go for some fries!

Mein
Mann und ich (beide Mitte 50) wohnen seit 1987 in Florida und kommen aus
Vaterstetten/München. Unsere Freunde aus Deutschland haben uns damals
geraten herzuziehen wegen der guten Arbeitsmöglichkeiten (sie sind seit
vielen Jahren wieder in Deutschland und wir sind hängengeblieben). Es gibt
viele Dinge, die wir vermissen, aber der nette Austausch mit Deutschen steht
wohl an erster Stelle. Da die Familie von meinem Mann in München wohnt,
versuchen wir sie mindestens einmal im Jahr zu besuchen. Und jetzt können
wir am Computer telefonieren und uns dabei sehen, und das noch kostenlos!

What do
I miss about Germany? EVERYTHING!
I first
went to Germany in late October of 1972 as a US soldier and was stationed in
Amberg, West Germany. I was offered a position to work on the Czech/W.
German border and I took it. I was then sent to Camp Rotz near Waldmunchen
and then to Campo May by Regen, near the Austrian border.
The
people were fantastic, the food was great and the country was beautiful. I
was in heaven!
I spent
about 6 ½ years in Germany and returned to the USA in May 1978. I went back
to visit in June of 1998 with my family and was fortunate to have met some
of my neighbours from Steinlohe/ Triffelstein and they were just as happy
to see me.
To this
day, I tell my grown up kids, the German people are the greatest, my son is
now married to a German from Geisfeld by Bamberg and we are going there in
October 2008, to do the church party of the wedding. I hope I see my friends
again.

Mein Name ist Bianca
Morgan und ich bin 33 Jahre alt. Wir leben hier in Fort
Bragg, Fayetteville, North Carolina seit über 5 Jahren und
ich kann mich immernoch nicht an die Staaten gewöhnen!
Ich
komme aus Mainz am Rhein, wir haben noch keine Kinder aber zwei Muds
(Hunde) :-) mit denen ich gerne spazieren gehe. Hier in der Nähe
unseres Hauses ist ein Riverwalk. Nicht direkt am River aber sehr
gemütlich im Wald. Ich vermisse natürlich jeden Duft, jedes Essen, und
jede Aussicht aus Deutschland.
Wir haben hier eine
Deutsche Gruppe die sich jeden 1. und 3. Mittwoch im Monat in
Fayetteville um 9 Uhr für Kaffeeklatsch trifft. Wer kommen
mag ist herzlichst eingeladen!!!
Im Oktober werden wir
nach Fort Rucker, Alabama PCS. Wer weiss ob es
dort auch eine Deutsche Gruppe gibt? Oder einen Deutschen
Laden/Bäcker/Metzger? Oder einen Riverwalk für meine Hunde? Oder auch
eine deutsche Abteilung in der Commissary?
Jede
Information wäre hilfreich! Oder wer dort stationiert ist und gerne

Servus
miteinander!
Mein Name ist Tanja, ich bin 29 Jahre alt und ich lebe
seit zwei Jahren in Oklahoma City, OK. Ich bin in einem winzigen Dorf in
der Nähe von Hammelburg aufgewachsen, hab in Würzburg studiert und in
Schweinfurt gearbeitet. Meinen Mann, der bei der Air Force ist, habe ich
in England kennengelernt als ich dort bei Freunden zum Besuch war.
Ich denke, ich muss nicht auflisten, was ich alles an
Deutschland vermisse. Da unterscheide ich mich nicht vom Rest: Brot,
Fussgängerzonen, Radwege, Bäckereien, überhaupt irgendwohin zu Fuss gehen
zu können, Strassencafes, etc. Die Liste ist quasi endlos. Ja, auch ich
habe Heimweh und werde mich hier in den USA wohl nie richtig zuhause
fühlen.
Glücklicherweise muss ich das auch
nicht. Mein Mann liebt Deutschland und meine Familie und Freunde so sehr,
dass wir uns auf jeden Fall in Deutschland niederlassen werden, wenn er
seinen Dienst in der Air Force absolviert hat. Noch 13 Jahre. Aber in drei
Wochen gehts erstmal auf Besuch in die Heimat. Zum Glück erlaubt mir mein
Beruf (ich bin selbständige Übersetzerin) längere Aufenthalte in
Deutschland, da ich auch von dort aus arbeiten kann. Und deswegen werde
ich ganze vier Wochen dort verbringen. Ich versuche auf jeden Fall
mindestens einmal pro Jahr nach Hause zu fliegen.
Ich freue mich über Emails von allen Deutschen hier in den
USA zum gegenseitigen Erfahrungsaustausch. Vielleicht gibt es jemanden
hier in der OKC-Gegend und man kann sich mal verabreden und Deutsch
quasseln. Dallas/Fort Worth ist auch nur gut 2 Stunden entfernt.

Ich habe
gerade wieder einmal auf eure Webseite geklickt und habe die neuesten
Einträge gelesen. Ich bin schon froh das ich nicht die einzige bin die sich
nach Deutschland sehnt.
Wird waren
letzten November in Deutschland um meine Familie zu besuchen und zur Taufe
meines Neffen dort zu sein. Ach, das gute Essen, die schöne Gegend. Wir
haben eine Woche in Bad Reichenhall/Berchtesgaden verbracht und hatten so
schönen Schnee, es war wirklich schwer für mich wieder zurück zu kommen.
Ich würde mich sehr über Kontakt von Bayern (Berchtesgadener Gebiet) freuen.

Guten Tag
I miss the Volks marches that my family and I participated in while being
stationed at Ramstein AFB from 1988 to 1992. The nature that we saw, the
people we met in different parts of the country. The Black Forest
was beautiful and we enjoyed camping. I miss the German food we ate
and I am grateful to GermanDeli for carrying some of the foods that I
can't find here in the states. The country was beautiful with the rolling
hills and the Rhine river. I never liked wine until I tasted it
there and I have been lucky to find German Spätlese here in the states.
It's not carried at all beverage stores, so when I come across it I buy a
case.
We lived in Kottweiler-Schwaden next to the sports place, watched the
soccer games and enjoyed the freedom to roam throughout the woods.
My husband and I hope to be able to return and make some more wonderful
memories. I loved the meat markets, flowers all year round, Bäckereien,
and the atmosphere and eating outside at cafes.
My husband's family was from Germany. The Reger's were from a small town
about 3 miles from the Czech border and the Köp's were on the border of
Luxembourgh. The history we learned and what we saw was something my
children and my grandchildren will be able to read about from journals I
kept. Thank you for this opportunity to tell what we felt and loved
about your country.

Ich bin von Österreich und lebe seit 1996
in den USA. Jetzt wohne ich mit meinem Mann und Sohn in Tampa Bay,
Florida.
Was mir am meisten abgeht sind die
Heurigen, der Christkindlmarkt, Leberkäse, Streichwurst, Schweinsbraten,
Knödel, Spinat mit Ei und Bratkartoffeln, Germknödel, Zwetschgenknödel,
Selchknödel, Salzstangerln, Semmeln...das Essen offensichtlich!! Spazieren
gehen, Gehsteige, Strassenbahnen, ein Twinni im Sommer...Freibäder.
Fasching, "ich geh mit meiner Laterne, und meine Laterne mit mir...dort
oben leuchten die Sterne, und unten leuchten wir". Krampus und Nikolo, und
auch die vielen Feiertage die wir hier nicht haben...

Idar-Oberstein, bin schon seit 1974 in der USA. Was ich vermisse,
der echte Idar-Obersteiner Spiessbraten und das Kirner Pils Brötchen und
das deutsche Brot.
Hatte in Chicago gewohnt und bin seit
1982 in Orange California, mir gefällt es hier sehr gut. War in 2001 das
letzte mal in Deutschland. Meine Eltern sind beide verstorben. Habe einen
Sohn und eine Tochter.

Hi, meine Name ist Sina, ich lebe jetzt seit ca. 8
Monaten in den Staaten. Von August bis Dezember war ich in Atlanta, GA.
Jetzt hat es mich nach Fort Worth in die Uni verschlagen. Hier ist alles
recht und schön, aber einfach nicht vergleichbar mit Deutschland. Ich
vermisse eigentlich alles. Da ich auch alleine hier bin und keinen deutschen
Kontakt in unmittelbarer Nähe (Familie und Freunde sind alle in D) habe, ist
es im Moment sehr schwer für mich. Ich werde auch nur noch bis Ende Anfang
Mai zur Schule gehen, dann ein bisschen arbeiten und den Juli nutzen um mir
die Staaten bzw. Hawaii anzuschauen. Dann geht's wieder zurück in mein
geliebtes Deutschland (Heilbronn)... werde immer wieder gerne hierherkommen,
aber leben will ich in Deutschland, bei meinen lieben. Kein Wetter der Welt
kann meine Familie und meine Freunde und "the way of life" den ich in
Deutschland habe, ersetzen. Viele Grüße an alle!

mein
Name ist Sylvia Dupuis geb:
Wunderlich und komme von Hanau am
Main (Hessen). Seit 1996 lebe
ich in Atchison, Kansas mit meinen
Söhnen.
Ich vermisse so viele Dinge
aus Deutschland das es schwer ist sie alle zu nennen, vor allem vermisse
ich meine Freunde, Frühstück, Quark,
das Essen, Schaufensterbummel, Eisdielen, Strassen Kaffees,
Fussgängerzonen, das deutsche Fernsehen und die Burgen, Schlösser.
Ich vermisse unsere romantische, mythologische Kultur, das Wandern
und Spazierengehen in den atemberaubend schönen Waldern und Parks. Ok, ich
habe Heimweh nach Deutschland, leider sind meine Kinder hier und ich kann
sie einfach nicht hier allein lassen.
Auch habe ich niemand zum
deutsch reden/schreiben und verliere so
langsam aber sicher meine Muttersprache. Ich würde ich mich sehr freuen,
von anderen Hanauern/Hessernund andere Landsleuten

Pirmasens in Rheinland Pfalz. Was ich sehr vermisse - die ganzen Bäume und
so. Aber man muss halt das Beste daraus machen und da kommt dann die

Grüss Gott
Ich vermisse die kleinen Stadt Cafes in der
Fussgänger Zone, bummeln in der Regensburger Altstadt, den Christkindlsmarkt
in Regensburg und Nürnberg mit Glühwein und Knacker Semmel; Brezeln,
Lachsschinken, Gelbwurst und all die deutschen Leckereien. Deutscher
Käsekuchen und Donauwellen kann ich hier backen, wenn ich Sauerkirschen und
Quark finde.
Im Winter fehlt mir der Schnee und ich wünsche
mir dann jedes mal dass ich irgendwo zum Skifahren kann...
Und Mama's Kartoffelsalat ist unschlagbar!!!
Ich komme ursprünglich aus Leonberg, ein kleines
Dorf in der Nähe von Regensburg und lebe seit 9 Jahren in den Staaten. Erst
Orlando, FL, dann Atlanta, GA und nun Lake Charles, LA (2 Stunden von
Houston, TX). Ich bin 38, verheiratet mit 9 Monate altem Baby...Ich versuche
alle 2 Jahre heimzufliegen.
Ich arbeite in der Hotellerie und der Küchenchef
ist halb deutsch. Er brachte mir von Arizona Gelb und Weisswurst mit und das
war wie Weihnachten!
GermanDeli ist wie ein "home away from home", ich
glaube, ich werde wieder eine Bestellung losschicken... Eine Freundin von
mir zog nach Dallas/Fort Worth area, wenn ich sie besuche, fahre ich 100%ig

Why do
I dream of Germany?? I do not know. I am not from Germany, but I do love
the country, the people, the food. My daughter-in-law, who is from
Germany, asked me this just a few days ago, and I really didn't know what
to tell her. I have visited there twice and totally fell in love with the
Flohmärkte, the people, the quaint towns, the heritage, the scenery, just
everything.
I have two very large photo albums and love to look at the pictures and
reminisce about the trips. If there was ever a place I could live other
than the US it would be Germany. As much as I would love to be able to
return there, those of you who were born there, how can you stand the
separation, the longing? I fully intend to make at least one more lengthy
visit in my lifetime. And I know I will not want to return home.

Just a few
years ago I went to Essen, Germany, to visit with my friend Hans, who was
in need of a kidney transplant. As I was tested to be a potential donor
over the five weeks I was, mostly, in Germany, we travelled some and
waited for medical information. I had to return to the states to settle
some things, and should have gone back more quickly as my friend Hans'
health deteriorated rapidly, and he passed away.
I miss going out for Brötchen, the afternoon Kaffee und Kuchen, and the
many people I met, who were so gracious. I went back a year later to visit
Hans' grave. I spent time with his family, who were truly great in helping
me relax after all the stresses that followed the year of hope and loss.
We celebrated this friend's life, and I was greatly thanked with a second
trip to Germany, where I was able to visit many locations from Eckernförde
to Schlüchtern.
What I miss about Germany is my friend and our conversations while
enjoying the many fine meals we had.

ich wohne seit knapp drei Jahren in TN. Was ich am meisten an Deutschland
vermisse sind meine Eltern, meinen Bruder, meine Freunde und die
Weihnachtsmärkte. Mein Mann war in Schweinfurt, Bayern stationiert. Dort
haben wir uns auch kennengelernt.
Ich gehe auf die Universität hier in Martin, TN. Was mir auch viel Spaß
macht. Meine Amerikanischen Freunde und ich machen fast jeden Monat
"German-night". Wir schauen uns zusammen Deutsche Filme an und kochen

Hallo, mein Name ist
Sabrina, bin 23 Jahre alt, und ich komme ursprünglich aus der Würzburger
Area. Ich wohne seit 3 Wochen in Columbia, SC. Ich kann nur sagen dass
ich das Wetter in Germany eben überhaupt nicht vermisse. Da geniesse ich
es lieber in der Sonne meine weissen Beine zu wärmen.
Ich bin halb Ami und
bin es gewohnt eine FREMDE zu sein. Trotzdem würde ich mich sehr freuen,
neue Bekanntschaften zum Kaffeetrinken und Quatschen zu schließen.
Ich vermisse Biskuitrollen, Rexona Deo's, Kaffee, Brötchen,
Müller und Bars die länger als 2 pm geöffnet haben, meine Familie und
Freunde. An die Mode kann man sich gewöhnen, da mich dieser 80'er Stil
sowie so nicht anspricht.
Ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn sich
jemand aus der Columbia bzw. SC Area melden würde.

Hallo mein Name ist Sassia. Ich lebe seit 1999 in den USA, im Moment in Casa
Grande, AZ. Bin ursprünglich aus Otterfing bei Holzkirchen.
Ich bin an sich sehr glücklich hier in den USA. Allerdings gibt es einige
Dinge die ich vermisse. Frisches Brot und Semmeln. (Danke GermanDeli, das
ich von Zeit zu Zeit ein bisschen Leckereien bekommen kann), meine Freunde in
Deutschland und nette Abende, Bayrische Musik und Feste.
Ich lebe mit meinem Mann sehr gemütlich und wir genießen die Stunden mit
unseren Pferden. Einer meiner deutschen Reiter Freundin ist auch nach AZ
gezogen und wir sind glücklich Weihnachten und Wochenenden zusammen zu
verbringen!

heisse Paula und komme aus Oberammergau. Was mich wundert ist, ist denn da
keine Seele die von meinem Dorf kommt, hier in America? Ich weiss, ich bin

ich vermisse
Deutschland und vor allem meine Heimatstadt Aachen auch sehr, und das noch
nach den gut 7 Jahren die ich nun schon hier in der DFW Metro, genauer
gesagt in Euless, Texas lebe. Ich vermisse eigentlich dasselbe wie die
meisten hier, das Essen, den Wald, Fußgängerwege, die Leute, Cafés, H&M
usw., Einkaufspromenaden, öffentlichen Verkehr.
Ich kenne leider
keine Deutschen hier, würde das aber sehr gerne ändern.

memories,
My Onkel
Otto and I were always thick as thieves. He was always the rosy
cheeked farmer dressed in warm clothes and smoking a pipe. When we
were left to ourselves in the main room, he would wink at me and I knew it
was time for our "Geheimnis drink." I would dive behind the couch
and pull out a bottle of orange drink with the old wired stopper and
behind that a bottle of Schnapps. He would carefully pour me some
orange and for himself, something stronger in two of my Oma's prized
glasses and we would cheerfully toast each other before I slid the bottles
back to their hiding places. Now that I think of it, perhaps his
complexion was due to something other than the cool weather, wink.

There is so
much I miss about our home in Langenselbold (Hessen). I was able to go
back this past December for a brief visit and I am truly missing my
friends and extended family there. I hated to move to the states and swore
that I would retire in DE but God always has other plans.
Perhaps one
day I can return with the family and let my son, who was born there, visit
again and see where he spent the first 3 years of his life. I am glad this
firm, GermanDeli.com is available and makes missing Germany a little
easier for my family living here in the states.

Zufall auf diese Seite gestossen. Finde ich echt toll.
Lebe seit 4 Wochen in Summerville SC, und hab noch
keine grossen Bekanntschaften geschlossen, fühle mich etwas einsam und hab
Heimweh. Haben in Summerville ein Haus gekauft, mein Mann ist den ganzen
Tag am arbeiten, dadurch bin ich halt viel allein. Gewohnt haben wir
vorher am Bodensee. Am meisten vermisse ich natürlich meine Kinder, sind
alle schon erwachsen. Brezel, frische Brötchen vom Bäcker, ein schönes
Cafe zum Kaffeeklatsch, mit Freundinnen bummeln gehn und neue Leute,

An Ode to Erfrischungs-Stäbchen
I am so excited! After
all these years, I'm looking forward to enjoying a long lost childhood
treasure.
I am a 54 year old man and I
am finding myself having to fight back tears now in the knowledge that
GermanDeli not only knows what I was talking about but that you DO carry it
and it will be only a matter of time until I can have some again. I
can remember taking this sweet with me everywhere. On a stroll along the
Neckar, sitting in the gardens along the Philosophenweg looking out over
scenic beauty I so grew to love, being up on the castle grounds getting into
mischief with my friends. I can even remember seeing my Opa who was
from Königsberg in Ostpreussen enjoying it regularly.
Even though I have spent most
of my life here in the United States, deep down inside I have always
remained German in so many ways. GermanDeli and the people who work
there and the people who share of themselves by their emails will help to
fill a void inside me and for that I am thankful!

I spent
3 years in Germany in the Army and I also married a German Frau. I love good
food and German food is good food. While in Germany I ate mostly on the
German Economy except at the end of the month when I was broke. The Army
food was schlecht.
My favorite foods were those foods with the rich and tasty sauces but of
course I also loved the different Schnitzel, Bratwurst, and Weisswurst.
Actually, I loved all the German food.
For
breakfast I would stop at the local strass stop (american slang) or Kiosk
and have Brötchen with either Fleischkäse or Leberkäse and they were two
distinct flavors. Fleischkäse was light pinkish in color and reminded me of
the old American bologna (when they used all meat instead of cereal
fillers). The Leberkäse was grey in color and had a light flavor some
what like Leberwurst. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
My
memory and tastebuds just got out of control and took me back to a Germany I
knew some 38 years ago.

I miss
EVERYTHING!!! The food, the beer, the friendliness of the German
people. All the "Feste." I lived in Dettlebach, I was there for
the city's 500th Birthday!! It was a great Weinfest!
And just the
over-all beauty of Germany! I would LOVE to go back one day and vist!!
I was in high school when I lived there, my Dad in the Army. I
actually stayed there when my parents came back to the US. I went to
Wurzburg American High school, which is now closed.
But I have
so many wonderful memories..

That is a
loaded question! I could write a book about our memories. I
was stationed at HQ USEUCOM, Patch Barracks in Stuttgart-Vaihingen
from Feb '72 to Mar '75, and living in military housing in Pattonville
(Ludwigsburg) while I was in the Air Force, and at HQ US Command Berlin,
Civilian Personnel, from Dec '88 to Nov '91, as a civil servant with the
Department of the Army.
We loved the
peace and serenity of living in Germany. Loving history, I was in
heaven. Visiting all of the Schloss's and the beautifully manicured
gardens was an experience in itself. The German food, along with
restaurants serving Greek, Yugoslav, Italian, Indian, and other cuisine
makes my mouth water today. And the people in the rural areas were
fantastic.
But most of
all, my wife and I miss Berlin on our last tour there. We were in
East Berlin the night the wall was opened. What an experience.
East Berliner's singing in the street, horns blaring, and the pandemonium
at Check Point Charlie. Seeing a young grandson pushing his Oma in a
wheel chair after exiting from the U-Bahn into West Berlin. She was
in her best dress, a brown coat, and a fur hat, and had tears in her eyes.
I will never forget that sight.
I remember
bringing two bottles of champagne to the wall on New Years Eve in '89 and
sharing it with newly acquired East German friends who had just come
through a hole in the wall near the Duppel housing. Those memories
still bring goose bumps and tears to my eyes. I gave many East
Berlin children a 20 mark bill so that they could buy something that they
could not afford. My wife and I both agree that those three years
were probably the best of our lives. I could even go out at 2 a.m.
in the morning and take a walk in the neighborhood without being afraid I
might get mugged.
I never
thought that I would say it, but I miss the German drivers. At least
you knew what to expect and everyone drove the same way and they followed
the rules of the road.

Durch Zufall bin ich auf GermanDeli
gestoßen und es hat mich wirklich sehr gewundert wie viel doch etwas
deutsches vermisst wird. Aber vielleicht kann ich ja durch einen
dauerhaften Kontakt etwas Abhilfe schaffen :-)
Ich bin Petra, 44 Jahre alt, verheiratet und wohnhaft in Deutschland, NRW
genauer gesagt in Essen. Seit meiner Hochzeit (1994) in Las Vegas und
einiger Urlaube in Miami bin ich von den USA, besonders von Florida

What do I
miss about Germany and Austria?
Everything
that has been mentioned by previous posters. I even checked the archives!
I am a
native Austrian (Lower Austria), but have lived in various parts of
Germany since I was 9 years old. Augsburg is the city where we lived the
longest, 1960-1974. It was and is a great city. None of the
military posts exist anymore and have been converted into state of the art
housing/shopping etc. I have been back numerous times and as one
poster mentioned, "when I am there I want to be back here and vice
versa"! How true. My heart goes out to some of you who are not able to
make the trip back to your homeland.
I made the
choice a long time ago to leave the country of my birth and follow my
husband to his. I'm sure that my family and my employer thought I was
insane to leave. When the $$ took the dive that it did in 1974, my
husband decided it was time to pack up and return to California. Well, it
was a culture shock for me, our son loved it and he took to living here
like a fish to water. I did not do as well and fought hard being
homesick, bravely hiding the fact from most, that I was truly missing the
life I had in Germany. My parents visited us under the pretense that the
United States existed for 200 years. I know they just wanted to check out
for themselves that we were doing ok. I did not speak German at all after
they returned home.
To get out
of the house I looked for a job and through a coworker joined Beta Sigma
Phi, the philanthropic organization. Three ladies from Germany were
amongst the membership. To my embarrassment I promptly broke out in tears
and it took some time before they were able to console me. Along helping
me to become comfortable speaking in public, the Sorority Sisters
supported me and I overcame my homesickness to a certain point.
My
last visit to Vienna and Augsburg was in November 2007 and I returned on
Thanksgiving Day. Most Americans waited to be able to board that plane
for the trip home. I overheard a few Serviceman/woman amongst the
passengers mention that they were thrilled to come back to the "land of
the round doorknob." I had not heard that expression in years!
Would these
very same people in maybe 10 or 20 years wish they could be back and enjoy
the German food, drink and way of life?
Probably! I
still miss all the things mentioned by the posters, even after 34 years.

Got my order! Very pleased!
Man those sour sticks were an instant transport back 41 years as a child in
Augsburg standing at the back of the old German candy man's blue VW micro
bus. The sights & smells! Oooohhhhh!
Thank you so very much for
providing an immensely satisfying stroll down memory lane for my brother,
sister & I! I have searched for 41 years for those sour sticks & have tried
to explain them to thousands of people unsuccessfully, comparing them
"slightly" to sweet tarts but that they're not quite the same. They taste
exactly as I/we remembered them & we'll be ordering many more of them &
other remembered & treasured candies soon.
Haha! You have opened a
virtual flood of wonderful childhood memories of Germany circa 1963-1966.
Thank you so very much especially for the support of our military! Being an
Army brat & having a son serving now, I am able to share my German memories
with him & now some of the candies. He just came back from 2 years in
Darmstadt & is now training to go downrange to Iraq in August.
I spent the last 3 months of
2007 in Germany with him, as well as Christmas 2006 & New Years 2007.
Although I was able to find the gummi bears & cola gummis, I was not able to
locate the sour sticks while there. Please don't forget to let me know when
you get the Schleckmuscheln or 'candy in a sea shell' candies. My sister is
excited about them although she was disappointed they are no longer in real
shells. She actually still has some of the old shells saved.

Hi all,
I was stationed in Kaufbeuren, Kempten and Darmstadt from 1948 through
1950. I was at a German Artillery Base in Kaufbeuren. Would love to know
if the base is still there and would love to hear from some folks who
might have been stationed there during those years.
I sailed from the Brooklyn Docks on the Lt J B Ray to Bremen and it took
21 days at that time. The Queen Mary passed us three times. We went
through the English Channel. I came back on the General Pershing.

Ich heiße
Sigrid Zeller Metzger, wohne seit 1986 in Tucson, AZ, und vermisse die
deutsche Sprache am meisten. Ich kenne keine einzige Person in Tucson die
deutsch ist (obwohl ich weiß daß Deutsche hier wohnen).
Was ich auch
vermisse - ich bin von der Stuttgarter Gegend, sind die Brezeln. Ich
mache manchmal Laugenwecken, denn die Brezeln sind zu schwierig, manmal
werden sie ziemlich gut und manchmal nicht. Es gibt so viele Leute hier
die sie mögen, ich wünsche mir nur ein schwäbischer Bäcker würde nach
Tucson kommen und eine Bäckerei aufmachen. Die wäre bestimmt ein Erfolg!
Also, wenn
es Bäcker gibt im Schwabenland, die gerne ins schöne Tucson kommen würden,
das wär' einfach wunderbar!

Hallo Ihr alle
Es ist
schon komisch zu sehen das so viele Leute alle das selbe vermissen von
Deutschland. Meine Name ist Kerstin und ich wohne
in Montrose, CO, aber ursprünglich bin ich aus dem Landkreis Lichtenfels in
Oberfranken. Ich bin nun seit 5 ½ Jahren hier, aber Weihnachtszeit
ist immer schlimm. Für mich
ist Heimweh nicht so sehr schlimm, denn meine Umgebung hier erinnert mich
sehr and die Fränkische Schweiz. Ich bin froh auf diese
Webseite gestossen zu sein denn so kann es mal wieder Brotzeit geben.
Brot backe ich selber, Quark mache ich selber, aber
manches geht nun mal nicht. Ich würde mich
freuen wenn mir jemand schreiben würde.

I, too, am
an Army-brat but with German heritage (mother is German and I was born in
Frankfurt on Dad's second tour - we returned again several years later for
his third tour). What I miss most about Germany is the weather (I still
refer to a gray - rainy day as a "Frankfurt" kind of day!). I live in
Alabama now and am no where near a German store - this site has helped me
relive so many memories as a child in the form of Kinder Schokolade,
Brause Stäbchen, and refreshment sticks. My Oma used to be my "supplier"
of such treats but passed on several years ago. My sister found your site
and we reminisced over so many items we found for sale. Fa? Incredible!

I still miss
Nordwest Centrum, Bauern Brot, Kräuterbutter (if someone knows the name of
the little packet that you added to butter, please let me know - I
couldn't find it on this site and I can't remember the name or
manufacturer), Hessentaller's Brötchen on Saturday mornings, Marzipan
birthday cakes and buying pommes fritz from a street vendor.
I also miss
the camaraderie that we all felt living together in New Edwards housing.
There is a bond that develops between brats that cannot be described.
We're all blessed and are so much richer for having spent a portion of our
lives overseas. My maiden name was Fessenden - if anyone reading this
remembers me, my sister, Michele, or my folks, I'd love to hear from you

Hallo,
Ich bin die Beate (54)
ursprünglich aus Kastellaun/Hunsrück und jetzt mit meinem Mann in Topeka,
Kansas. Hatte letzten Monat während eines Besuches bei unserer Tochter in
Dallas das grosse Vergnügen bei GemanDeli einzukaufen.
Ich kam mir vor wie im
Schlaraffenland, tolle Wurst , frische Brötchen, Zwieback, Schokolade und
sonst noch so einiges. Es wird nicht der letzte Besuch sein.
Würde mich sehr über
Mails freuen, vielleicht sind auch einige hier nach Kansas oder Umgebung
verschlagen.

My wife and
I lived near Frankfurt for about 2 years and they were the best two years
we have had together! I could go on and on, but here is a start of a long
list of what we miss:
Public
Transport
Technology
Culture
Sense of
belonging that people have
Strolling
along a river after a busy work day and stopping and having Glühwien
or Bier on the streets.
The
variety of international foods available
Weihnachtsmarkt and all the other traditions of the holidays!!!! (In
every little town and suburb!!!)

Hallo
ich bin Moni (35), ursprünglich aus Bonn und lebe seit 7 Monaten in
Goldsboro, North Carolina. Mein Mann und ich vermissen Deutschland sehr und
versuchen wieder nach Deutschland zu kommen nach 3 Jahren.
An das amerikanische Essen hatte ich mich schon in Deutschland gewöhnt, da
mein Mann (Ami) ganz oft kocht und in Deutschland auch immer auf der Air
Force Base eingekauft hat. Aber auf so leckere Dinge wie deutsche
Schokolade, gesundes Brot und leckeren Aufschnitt wollte ich dann hier doch
nicht verzichten.
Dank GermanDeli kann ich das jetzt alles haben, ohne mir teure Pakete
schicken zu lassen. Die Seite ist einfach super - konnte mir jetzt mal was
von der Seele schreiben ....
Ich bin kurz vor Weihnachten erst wieder zurückgekommen aus Deutschland. Ich
war natürlich in den 3 Wochen mindestens 6 mal auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt.
Dinge, die ich am meisten vermisse sind: Familie, Freunde, Tratsch mit den
Nachbarn, Biergärten, lange Spaziergänge (hier gibts es kaum Bürgersteige),
Fussgängerzonen mit Cafes, gemütliche Restaurants (wo man nicht stundenlang
auf einen Platz warten muss), Glühwein, Schnitzel usw. Vielleicht sieht es
in grösseren Städten anders aus, denn wir leben hier wirklich wie auf dem
Dorf.
Geht es jemand genauso wie mir? Oder gibt es jemanden aus meiner Umgebung in
NC? Würde mich freuen, denn ich habe hier noch keine Freunde gefunden -
weder Amis noch Deutsche.

Hello,
I love your site! What do I miss about Germany?
Let's see... Of course Bitburger Pils! I lived in Bitburg for two years. I
also miss schwip-schwap, and the little Wurst stand that is on the platform
at the Frankfurt Main train station. (In my opinion,the best place for a
snack!)
